The term 'soil' as it applies to the area of reclamation can be defined as ' Sediments or other unconsolidated accumulations of solid particles produced by the physical and chemical disintegration of rocks, and which may or may not contain organic matter. Soil components may consist of clay, silt, sand, or gravel. The loose surface material of the earth's crust'.

The term 'soil' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' a layer of weathered, unconsolidated material on top of bed rock; often also defined as containing organic matter and being capable of supporting plant growth'.
