The term 'sediment' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' (1) loose, fragments of rocks, minerals or organic material which are transported from their source for varying distances and deposited by air, wind, ice and water. other sediments are precipitated from the overlying water or form chemically, in place. sediment includes all the unconsolidated materials on the sea floor. (2) (smp) the fine grained material deposited by water or wind'.

The term 'sediment' as it applies to the area of reclamation can be defined as ' Any finely divided organic and/or mineral matter deposited by air or water in nonturbulent areas. Unconsolidated solid material that comes from weathering of rock and is carried by, suspended in, or deposited by water or wind'.

The term 'sediment' as it applies to the area of water can be defined as 'usually applied to material in suspension in water or recently deposited from suspension. In the plural the word is applied to all kinds of deposits from the waters of streams, lakes, or seas'.
