The term 'pile' as it applies to the area of reclamation can be defined as ' Relatively slender structural element which is driven, or otherwise introduced, into the soil, usually for the purpose of providing vertical or lateral support'.

The term 'pile' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' a long substantial pole of wood, concrete or metal, driven into the earth or sea bed to serve as a support or protection'.
