The term 'fault' as it applies to the area of reclamation can be defined as ' A fracture or fracture zone in the earth's crust along which there has been displacement of the two sides relative to one another or in rock along which the adjacent rock surfaces are differentially displaced. Break in rocks along which movement has occurred. A shear with significant continuity that can be correlated between observation points. See active fault'.

The term 'fault' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' a fracture in rock along which there has been an observable amount of displacement. faults are rarely single planar units; normally they occur as parallel to sub-parallel sets of planes along which movement has taken place to a greater or lesser extent. such sets are called fault or fracture-zones'.
