The term 'clay' as it applies to the area of reclamation can be defined as ' Fine-grained soil or the fine-grained portion of soil that can be made to exhibit plasticity (putty-like properties) within a range of moisture contents, and that exhibits considerable strength when air-dry. The term 'clay' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' a fine grained sediment with a typical grain size less than 0.004 mm. possesses electromagnetic properties which bind the grains together to give a bulk strength or cohesion'.
