The term 'bitumen' as it applies to the area of energy can be defined as ' A naturally occurring viscous mixture, mainly of hydrocarbons heavier than pentane, that may contain sulphur compounds and that, in its natural occurring viscous state, is not recoverable at a commercial rate through a well'.

The term 'bitumen' as it applies to the area of carbon dioxide can be defined as ' Dark, naturally occurring solid or semisolid substances composed mainly of a mixture of hydrocarbons with little oxygen, nitrogen, or sulfur'.
