backshore

The term 'backshore' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' (1) the upper part of the active beach above the normal reach of the tides (high water), but affected by large waves occurring during a high. (2) (smp) the accretion or erosion zone, located landward of ordinary high tide, which is normally wetted only by storm tides'.
