The term 'aquifer' as it applies to the area of reclamation can be defined as ' A water-bearing stratum of permeable rock, sand, or gravel. A water-bearing formation that provides a ground water reservoir. Underground water-bearing geologic formation or structure. A geologic formation, group of formations, or part of a formation that stores and transmits water and yields significant quantities of water to wells and springs. A natural underground layer of porous, water-bearing materials (sand, gravel) usually capable of yielding a large amount or supply of water'.

The term 'aquifer' as it applies to the area of the weather can be defined as ' In hydrologic terms, permeable layers of underground rock, or sand that hold or transmit groundwater below the water table that will yield water to a well in sufficient quantities to produce water for beneficial use'.

The term 'aquifer' as it applies to the area of Earth observation can be defined as ' Layer of water-bearing permeable rock, sand, or gravel capable of providing significant amounts of water'.

The term 'aquifer' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' a geologic formation that is water-bearing, and which transmits water from one point to another'.
