The term 'alkaline' as it applies to the area of reclamation can be defined as ' Having a pH of 7.0 or above. The condition of water or soil which contains a sufficient amount of alkali substances to raise the pH above 7.0. The quality of being bitter due to alkaline content'.

The term 'alkaline' as it applies to the area of water can be defined as 'sometimes water or soils contain an amount of alkali (strongly basic) substances sufficient to raise the pH value above 7.0 and be harmful to the growth of crops'.

The term 'alkaline' as it applies to the area of Earth observation can be defined as ' Substance capable of neutralizing acid, with a pH greater than 7.0. See pH'.
