Undertow

The term 'Undertow' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' (1) a current below water surface flowing seaward; the receding water below the surface from waves breaking on a shelving beach. (2) actually undertow is largely mythical. as the backwash of each wave flows down the beach, a current is formed which flows seaward. however, it is a periodic phenomenon. the most common phenomena expressed as undertow are actually rip currents'.

The term 'Undertow' as it applies to the area of the weather can be defined as ' A relatively small-scale surf-zone current moving away from the beach. Rip currents form as waves disperse along the beach causing water to become trapped between the beach and a sandbar or other underwater feature. The water converges into a narrow, river-like channel moving away from the shore at high speed'.
