Sinkhole

The term 'Sinkhole' as it applies to the area of water can be defined as 'a depression in the Earth's surface caused by dissolving of underlying limestone, salt, or gypsum. Drainage is provided through underground channels that may be enlarged by the collapse of a cavern roof'.

The term 'Sinkhole' as it applies to the area of reclamation can be defined as ' A steep-sided depression formed when removal of subsurface embankment or foundation material causes overlying material to collapse into the resulting void'.
