To compute national population-weighted degree-days, the Nation is divided into nine Census regions comprised of from three to eight states that are assigned weights based on the ratio of the population of the region to the total population of the Nation. Degree-day readings for each region are multiplied by the corresponding population weight for each region, and these products are then summed to arrive at the national population weighted degree-day figure.
