If built of concrete or masonary the structure is usually referred to as a flood wall. Levees and floodwalls confine streamflow within a specified area to prevent flooding. The term 'dike' is used to describe an embankment that blocks an area on a reservoir or lake rim that is lower than the top of the dam'.The term 'Levee' as it applies to the area of coastlines can be defined as ' (1) an embankment to prevent inundation. (2) (smp) a large dike or embankment, often having an access road along the top, which is designed as part of a system to protect land from floods'. The term 'Levee' as it applies to the area of reclamation can be defined as ' A natural or man-made barrier that helps keep rivers from overflowing their banks. See dike'.
